Haryana: ML Khattar Out, Nayab Singh Saini Takes Oath As New CM

BJP leader Nayab Singh Saini becomes the new Chief Minister of Haryana. This news comes soon after Manohar Lal Khattar resigned from the position of Chief Minister on Tuesday morning, followed by the Cabinet. The alliance between the BJP and JJP is headed for a split before the Lok Sabha polls. Reportedly, Five JJP MLAs are likely to join the BJP.

According to reports, there is a chance of a “complete Cabinet reshuffle” without any representation from the JJP. Instead, the BJP is considering gaining support from Independent MLAs and may include a few of them in the Cabinet.

Discussions regarding the allocation of seats for the Lok Sabha elections have reached an impasse, as the BJP has held back on the JJP’s request for 2 out of the 10 constituencies in Haryana. Following the BJP’s failure to secure a majority in the 2019 Assembly polls, the JJP and BJP formed a coalition in the state.

On Monday, JJP leader and Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala met BJP president J P Nadda in New Delhi, where he was reportedly informed that the party would not be sharing any Lok Sabha seats with him. A planned meeting between Dushyant and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday morning did not take place.

Meanwhile, the JJP MLAs, led by Dushyant, are in New Delhi to reportedly discuss party’s future course of action. Dushyant, along with Anoop Dhanak and Devender Singh Babli, serves as one of the three JJP ministers in the Khattar government.

The JJP has been pushing for the Hisar and Bhiwani-Mahendragarh Lok Sabha seats, while the BJP state unit aims to contest all 10 constituencies and has informed the high command accordingly. The BJP has also assembled a list of potential candidates. The JJP plans to convene a meeting in Hisar on March 13, positioning it as a display of strength.

According to the report, Khattar convened a meeting with Independent MLAs to gauge their inclinations. Nayan Pal Rawat, the Independent MLA from Prithla, said the CM invited him for a discussion. “He asked if I was with the BJP. I told him that I and other Independent MLAs had always been with the CM and been supporting the BJP from day one.”

Rawat expressed his impression that the BJP-JJP alliance had dissolved. He also advised Khattar that the BJP should independently contest all 10 Lok Sabha seats.

This isn’t the first instance where the BJP-JJP coalition has faced pressure, especially considering the latter was established just before the 2019 elections. Concerns have arisen over the impact of farmer protests on its Jat vote bank.
Following the Lok Sabha polls, Haryana is slated to hold Vidhan Sabha elections in October.

Recently, the Haryana government made significant changes by reshuffling key officials in departments overseen by Dushyant Chautala, which was interpreted as an attempt to isolate him.

On last official count, in the 90-member Haryana Assembly, the BJP holds 41 seats, the Congress has 30, the JJP has 10, and there are 7 Independents, along with one MLA each from the INLD and Haryana Lokhit Party
