New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to include Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh on currency notes. He made this appeal in a bid to “get the economy back on track.” Big havoc has been created after Kejriwal made this appeal. Many Political leaders have slammed Arvind Kejriwal for making this appeal.

Indirectly stating that nation’s economy is not in shape Kejriwal said, “We need a lot of efforts to get our economy back on track, but along with that we also need blessings of our gods and goddesses.”

He said, “On Indian currency notes…on one side there is the picture of Gandhi Ji…it should remain as it is…if we put a photo of Ganesha Ji and Lakshmi Ji on the other side, the entire country will get their blessings.”

Reacting to Arvind Kejriwal’s statement, Congress MP from Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, Manish Tewari tweeted, “Why not Dr BabaSahib Ambedkar’s photograph on new series of currency notes? One side the great Mahatma the other side Dr Ambedkar. Non violence, Constitutionalism & egalitarianism fusing in a unique Union that would sum up the modern Indian genius perfectly.  @ArvindKejriwal”

Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ram Kadam tweeted photoshopped images of 500 rupees notes. In the photos, Mahatma Gandhi has been replaced with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, who is popularly known as the Chief Architects of the Indian Constitution, freedom fighter Vinayak Savarkar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He captioned the images, “Akhand Bharat… Naya Bharat… Mahan Bharat… Jai Shree Ram… Jai Mata Di!”

Besides Ram Kadam, BJP leader and Kankavali MLA Nitesh Rane tweeted a photoshopped image of 200 rupee note with the caption, “This is perfect.”

Kejriwal has suggested including images of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh on currency notes. He has argued that this can be a way to strengthen the economy and has indicated that it can also help prevent the fall of the rupee against the dollar.

BJP’s national spokesperson Sambit Patra, while speaking with reporters, had termed Arvind Kejriwal’s demand as an extension of AAP’s ‘U-turn politics’, and called it hypocrisy. He tweeted, “Till yesterday, those who were threatening to put you in jail for celebrating Diwali, were denying Ram temple, insulting Swastika and Kashmiri Hindus, today they are chanting Ram-Ram and Lakshmi Ganesha by becoming Kalnemi of Kalyug. U-turn is the culmination of politics.”

Senior BJP leader Manoj Tiwari had also termed the demand as “an attempt to save face ahead of the elections by AAP, which ‘misbehaves’ with Hindu gods and goddesses”. He had also told reporters, “Those who had been opposing the Ram temple, they have brought a new mask.”

Not only the BJP but also BSP expressed their opinion on Kejriwal’s appeal. The national Coordinator of the Bahujan Samaj Party Akash Anand has also expressed his opinion on Kejriwal’s statement. He tweeted, “Character and face! The real form of Kejriwal ji has now come to the fore. Actually, they do not have any face, they mold themselves as per the requirement of the situation. In the Punjab elections, the farmers were friendly and now the Hindutva within them has woken up as Gujarat Elections are around the corner.”

He added, “What a color change party this is. On one hand, they pretend to be Bahujan friendly by putting Babasaheb’s picture and on the other side, they talk about changing notes to get votes. A great battle has been fought.”

Apart from all this, the leader of Maharashtra’s Uddhav faction, Anil Parab, has demanded to put a picture of the late Balasaheb Thackeray on the note.

Simultaneously, Swami Jitendranand Saraswati also issued a statement saying that we do not want Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh’s photos printed on the currency. Everyone is worshiped and revered for us. In a secular country, religious leaders do not see any need for this. We will never mind that notes containing images of Goddess Lakshmi and Shri Ganesh go to the lanes of meat and liquor shops. Swami Jitendranand Saraswati said that if your Hindu love is outraged, then quietly hand over the accused of the Delhi riots to the police.

On Kejriwal’s appeal, Sanjay Nirupam said that replacing Mahatma Gandhi from Currency notes is a big insult to him.

The real question is will our economy improve by putting pictures of deities on the note? The price of the Rupee has become an all-time low as compared to Dollar. Our economy has collapsed. Our imports are increasing and foreign reserves are decreasing.
