India Bans Pakistan Imports And Mail; Pakistan Reciprocates

India-Pakistan Trade Ban

In a reciprocal action, Pakistan has also halted all trade with India

In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, India has implemented a ban on both direct and indirect imports from Pakistan, as well as prohibited Pakistani vessels from accessing Indian ports.

Although direct imports from Pakistan have been minimal, certain goods have been entering India through indirect routes or third-party countries.

Authorities took this measure to safeguard national security and uphold public policy, as the notification indicated.

The Directorate General of Shipping ordered that no ship flying the Pakistani flag could dock at any Indian port.

The ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan have led to trade becoming the first casualty, with New Delhi already announcing the closure of trade through the Attari-Wagah border, the sole land border crossing between the two nations.

In a reciprocal action, Pakistan has also halted all trade with India. Direct trade had already significantly decreased following India’s revocation of Pakistan’s Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status after the Pulwama attack in 2019, which resulted in the deaths of over 40 soldiers.

The Attari-Wagah border facilitated trade worth Rs 3,886.53 crore in the fiscal year 2023-24. India’s strategic decisions will profoundly affect the economies of Pakistani small traders and manufacturers.

Although India has imported negligible goods directly from Pakistan in recent years, businesses have rerouted some goods through ports in Dubai, Singapore, and Colombo to circumvent trade restrictions. According to data, in 2023-24, India imported goods, primarily agricultural products, valued at USD 3 million from Pakistan. However, Pakistan relies on India for pharmaceutical supplies.

With India ceasing all trade, a concerned Pakistan has begun to urgently explore alternative sources to fulfil its pharmaceutical requirements.

The Government of India has also suspended the exchange of all types of inbound mail and parcels from Pakistan. This is through both air and surface routes, as per an order issued by the ministry of communications.

Earlier, India had also blocked many YouTube and social media accounts. This included many major Pakistan news channels and also Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s YouTube channel.
