India has suspended the X account of Global Times, which is a Chinese state-run media outlet. This was because the government termed its publication on Operation Sindoor as “disinformation”.
The military undertook Operation Sindoor as a counter-terrorist effort to destroy terrorist bases and locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK). They undertook this to avenge the Pahalgam attack, which took place on 22 April.
The official X account of Global Times News now displays a message, which shows, “Account Withheld. @globaltimesnews has been withheld in response to a legal demand.”
In the earlier part of the day, India had issue a statement which was a condemnation of China’s continuous attempts. These were to territorially claim Arunachal Pradesh, a north-eastern state of India.
India has called China’s tries to give new names to locations within Arunachal Pradesh a “vain and preposterous” effort. The Centre has strongly rejected its attempts to do so.
This response from India comes a critical time when India’s ties with Pakistan have also been at a steep low. This is after the Pahlagam attack which terrorists staged against innocent tourists who visited Jammu and Kashmir. China’s actions strongly suggest an attempt to defy India’s sovereignty as a nation.
Meanwhile, India also blocked Xinhua, another Chinese media-run outlet and TRT World, a Turkish government-funded media outlet.
The Indian Embassy in Beijing had earlier posted a message on X for China.
The message read, “Dear @globaltimesnews, we would recommend you verify your facts and cross-examine your sources before pushing out this kind of disinformation.”
The Embassy then wrote, “Several pro-Pakistan handles are spreading baseless claims in the context of #OperationSindoor, attempting to mislead the public. When media outlets share such information without verifying sources, it reflects a serious lapse in responsibility and journalistic ethics.”
