India Calls Bangladesh’s Comments On Murshidabad Violence ‘Unwarranted’

MEA rejects Bangladesh’s ‘protect Muslims in Bengal violence’ remark

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday rejected comments made by Bangladesh on violence in Murshidabad. The incident caused three fatalities and injured several others.

“We reject the remarks made by the Bangladesh side with regard to the incidents in West Bengal. This is a barely disguised and disingenuous attempt to draw a parallel with India’s concerns over the ongoing persecution of minorities in Bangladesh where the criminal perpetrators of such acts continue to roam free,” said the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.

Adding to this, he said, “Instead of making unwarranted comments and indulging in virtue signalling, Bangladesh would do better to focus on protecting the rights of its own minorities.”

This was in response to what the press secretary to Muhammad Yunus, Shafiqul Alam, said. He urged India to “fully protect” its Muslim minority population. Alam also denied there was any involvement of Bangladesh in the Murshidabad violence.

“We strongly refute any attempts to implicate Bangladesh in the communal violence in Murshidabad,” Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Alam told the local media at the Foreign Service Academy.

Violence erupted in West Bengal’s Murshidabad and Bhangar following Parliament’s approval toThe Waqf (Amendment) Act. Reports also indicate that protesters clashed with security forces and set fire to police vehicles.

Claims were made by the West Bengal BJP unit that more than “400 Hindus” were forced to flee their homes in Dhulian town of Murshidabad district following targeted violence against them.

According to a report by ANI, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) was briefed about an initial probe into the Murshidabad violence, which had shown the involvement of alleged Bangladeshi miscreants.

The initial findings also suggest that the miscreants may have gotten assistance from local authorities but eventually became recalcitrant and unmanageable. In the meantime, the MHA was closely tracking the happenings in Murshidabad and other closely concerned sensitive regions.
