New Delhi: Dowry Deaths are something commonly witnessed around the country. Recently, as per the data shared by PIB India reported 35,493 cases of Dowry Deaths from 2017-2021. Most cases of Dowry deaths were reported in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The Dowry Prohibition Act was enacted on May 1, 1961. Under this act receiving or giving dowry is considered an offensive crime. The Dowry Prohibition Act applies to persons of all religions in India. If a person gives or takes or abets the giving or taking of dowry, he shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than five years, and with a fine which shall not be less than fifteen thousand rupees or the amount of the value of such dowry, whichever is more.
Bihar reported 1081 Dowry Death Cases in 2017, 1107 in 2018, 1120 in 2019, 1046 in 2020, and 1000 in 2021. Uttar Pradesh reported 2524 Dowry Death Cases in 2017, 2444 in 2018, 2410 in 2019, 2274 in 2019, and 2222 in 2021. UP and Bihar together accounted for nearly half (48 percent) of the total dowry deaths in the country.
States like Gujarat, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Goa, Meghalaya, and Manipur reported 0 to 50 cases from 2017 to 2021.
The numbers are declining but still are quite high and a big matter of concern.
