Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Dates Announced

The Election Commission of India revealed the 2024 Lok Sabha elections will be conducted across seven phases, from April 19 to June 1, with results slated for announcement on June 4.

Consequently, the Model Code of Conduct is now in force. The voting schedule for each phase is as follows: April 19 (first phase) (102 seats), April 26 (second phase) (89 seats), May 7 (third phase) (94 seats), May 13 (fourth phase) (96 seats), May 20 (fifth phase) (49 seats), May 25 (sixth phase) (57 seats), and June 1 (seventh phase) (57 seats).

Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tripura, and Manipur will vote in two phases. Chattisgarh and Assam will have three phases of voting. Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand will see voting spread across four phases. Maharashtra, Jammu, and Kashmir will go to the polls in over five phases. Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar will undergo voting in seven phases.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar also declared the four-state assembly schedule for Assembly elections.

Andhra Pradesh will vote on May 13, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim on April 19, and Odisha in four phases from May 13. Bypolls on 26 Assembly seats will also be held along with the Lok Sabha polls. Approximately 96.8 crore eligible voters will cast their ballots across over 12 lakh polling stations.

No simultaneous polls will be held in Jammu And Kashmir.

During a press conference today, the Election Commission reiterated its commitment to tackling the obstacles to free and fair elections, commonly called the “4Ms”: muscle, money, misinformation, and violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

55 lakh Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be utilized throughout the electoral process. Additionally, voters aged above 85 years and individuals with disabilities meeting the 40% benchmark can opt to cast their votes from home. While the “vote from home” option has been utilized in certain assembly elections, this marks the first time it will be implemented nationwide for a general election.
