Maharashtra Assembly To Discuss Maratha Quota Today

Maharashtra Assembly To Discuss Maratha Quota Today

The Maharashtra government has scheduled a special session of the Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday to address the issue of Maratha reservation. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized that the reservation for Marathas would adhere to legal requirements. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shinde.

The Chief Minister stated that a comprehensive survey covered nearly 2-2.5 crore individuals. He assured that the OBC communityโ€™s interests would also be considered. The government plans to present the survey report to the cabinet committee and implement the Maratha reservation by law. The special assembly session on February 20 is intended for this purpose.

The initiative to convene this session stemmed from the ongoing hunger strike of Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil in Antarwali Saarati village, Jalna district. The decision reflects the governmentโ€™s commitment to addressing the demands of the Maratha community.

In parallel, discussions within the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition aimed to strategize for the upcoming session. Congress president Nana Patole highlighted the need for opposition involvement in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) to ensure adherence to constitutional processes.

Amidst these developments, Maharashtraโ€™s political landscape experienced a shift as the Election Commission recognized Ajit Pawarโ€™s faction as the โ€˜realโ€™ Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), prompting a legal challenge from Sharad Pawar. The Supreme Courtโ€™s interim order allowed Sharad Pawar to use โ€˜Nationalist Congress Partyโ€“Sharad Chandra Pawarโ€™ until further notice.

The Election Commissionโ€™s decision was based on assessing majority support within the legislative wing, where Ajit Pawarโ€™s faction demonstrated more supporting MLAs than Sharad Pawarโ€™s faction. This ruling permitted Ajit Pawarโ€™s faction to utilize the โ€˜clockโ€™ symbol for the party.

This legal dispute underscores the complexities within Maharashtraโ€™s political landscape, with implications for party representation and governance. The upcoming special assembly session holds significance for addressing the Maratha reservation issue and navigating the broader political dynamics within the state.
