Leaders of the 16 out of 22 invited parties meet at the Constitution Club in Delhi.
New Delhi: The opposition meeting called by West Bengal CM and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee in an effort to unify against the BJP’s Presidential candidate for the polls later next month is currently underway at the Constitution Club, Delhi.
Last week Banerjee called out to 22 opposition parties in an attempt to strategize plans and arrive at a consensus in deciding potential candidates for the Presidential polls. The request invited MP’s and other leaders of opposition parties to convene today at the Constitution Club.
The list of invited members from Non-BJP allies included big names such as Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury, DMK’s TR Baalu, Shiv Sena’s Subash Desai, RLD’s Jayant Chaudhary, Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party leader Mehboba Mufti and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah.
Telangana CM Chandrasekhar Rao, earlier this week declined the request stating its difficulties with Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi.
The CM expressed the party’s opposition against Congress saying that, “Rahul Gandhi, in a recent public meeting in Telangana, had targeted the TRS government without any word of criticism against the BJP,”.
Meanwhile, AAP commented that “”Will consider the issue only after the candidate for the upcoming Presidential election is declared.”
