Meet Maharashtra’s New Governor Ramesh Bais

Ramesh Bais has also served as the Union minister of state in the second and third Vajpayee ministries holding several portfolios – Steel, Mines, Chemicals and Fertilizers, Information and Broadcasting, and also Minister of State (Independent charge) for Mines and Environment and Forests till May 2004.

“Big win for Maharashtra! The resignation of the anti-Maharashtra Governor has finally been accepted! He, who constantly insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule & Savitri bai Phule, our Constitution, Assembly & democratic ideals, cannot be accepted as a Governor!.” said Yuva Sena chief Aadity Thackeray soon after the news of Maharashtra governor Bhagat Sigh Koshyari’s resignation got accepted.

After months of criticism from the state’s opposition, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Sigh Koshyari’s resignation was accepted by president Droupadi Murmu who appointed Ramesh Bais as the new governor of the state. Koshyari was alleged of hurting sentiments after he referred to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as an icon of the old generations. He also attracted fury for his remarks on MahatmaĀ  & Savitri bai Phule. ā€œSavitribai was married off when she was ten years oldā€¦and her husband (Jyotiba) was 13 years old. Now imagine, what would the boy and girls have been doing after marriage. What would they have been thinking?ā€ Koshyari had said while cackling with laughter during the inauguration of a statue of Savitribai Phule inĀ Pune.

Who is Ramesh Bias?

Born on August 2, 1947, in Raipur, Madhya Pradesh, Ramesh Bais completed his higher secondary education at BSE, Bhopal. He was first elected to the Municipal Corporation of Raipur in 1978. In 1980, Bais won the MP Assembly election from Mandir Hasod Constituency but lost the seat in the 1985 election to Congress’ Satyanarayan Sharma.

In 1989, he was elected for the first time to the Indian parliament as a member of the 9th Lok Sabha from Raipur and was re-elected consecutively from 1996 to the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th,15th, and 16th Lok Sabha

Ramesh Bais has also served as the Union minister of state in the second and third Vajpayee ministries holding several portfolios – Steel, Mines, Chemicals and Fertilizers, Information and Broadcasting, and also Minister of State (Independent charge) for Mines and Environment and Forests till May 2004.

He served as the Governor of Tripura from July 2019 to July 2021 – succeeding Kaptan Singh Solanki. Since July 14, 2021, he has been serving as the 10th Governor of Jharkhand.

  • Governor of Arunachal Pradesh appointed as Lt Governor of Ladakh.
  • Lt General Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik was appointed as Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Gulab Chand Kataria as Governor of Assam.
  • Ramesh Bais appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra.
  • Lakshman Prasad Acharya as Governor of Sikkim.
  • CP Radhakrishnan as Governor of Jharkhand.
  • Shiv Pratap Shukla as Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
