Rajnath Singh in a move to arbitrate the row today announced a 10% percent reservation in the Defence Ministry to absorb the ‘Agniveers’.

New Delhi: With violent responses against the newly launched Agnipath military recruitment policy underway all across the nation, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in a move to arbitrate the row today announced a 10% percent reservation in the Defence Ministry to absorb the ‘Agniveers’.

Singh announced that a 10% reservation will be designed to be executed at the earliest in the Coast Guard and 16 other defence public sector undertakings.

Sigh tweeted, “The 10% reservation will be implemented in the Indian Coast Guard and defence civilian posts, and all the 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings. This reservation would be in addition to existing reservation for ex-servicemen,”.

The announcement released earlier today is seen as a move to stalemate the violent demonstrations that occurred across the country in response to the new policy. Military aspirants upset over the decision across the nation took to roads and highways in violent protests earlier this week.

“Necessary amendments to relevant recruitment rules will be undertaken to implement these provisions. Defence Public Sector Undertakings will be advised to make similar amendments to their respective recruitment rules. Necessary age relaxation provision will also be made,” he said.

This move came coupled with an age relaxation in the upper limit for the Agniveers from 21-23 as announced by the Home Ministry earlier today.

Presently upto 73,000 posts are available in 5 units of the paramilitary forces: Border Security Force (BSF), Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Shastra Seema Bal (SSB), Central Industrial Force (CIF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The CAPFS and the Assam Rifles reportedly have 73,219 open positions, while 18,214 positions are presently vacant in the police forces of the Union Territories.
