Modi Cabinet Approves One Nation One Election

PM Narendra Modi-led union cabinet has given a nod to one nation, one election, which proposes simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, with urban body and panchayat polls to be held within 100 days – accepting the report of a panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind.

The panel, which submitted its report earlier this year, also said it had studied best practices from other countries and consulted economists and the Election Commission before delivering its verdict. It also called for a legally sustainable mechanism to break and re-align existing electoral cycles.

NDA partners like Nitish Kumar’s JDU and LJP have also formally extended support for the move, which opposition parties, including the Congress, have opposed.
India last saw one nation one election in 1967.
