The opposition protested in the parliament complex as the government didn’t allow the discussion over price rise and GST.
Mumbai: On the second day of the monsoon session today, the opposition leaders held a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi Statue in the parliament, against the inflation and rise in GST and began sloganeering against the centre. The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Supriya Sule of NCP, Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, and Priyanka Chaturvedi from Shiv Sena participated in the protest, demanding the centre to remove price hike in LPG cylinders.
Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge said that the hike in prices and 5% imposed GST on basic commodities will hurt common people, hence we are ready to protest inside the house too.
Manickam Tagore, the whip for the Congress in the Lok Sabha, claimed that opposition lawmakers led by his party wanted to discuss price hikes and the GST, but the government didn’t permit it. As a result, the speaker delayed the House till 2 pm. “We will raise the same when the House reconvenes. Why is the government afraid about holding the discussion,” he said.
As the monsoon session of the parliament began on Monday, PM Narendra Modi said all the parties should cooperate to make the discussions fruitful.
The house has been adjourned till tomorrow.
