Paytm CEO Vijay Sharma Meets RBI, FM Nirmala Sitharaman

The founder and CEO of Paytm, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, recently convened with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and representatives from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to address regulatory challenges impacting Paytm Payments Bank, an affiliate of the digital payment giant. This meeting, described as “largely positive” by insiders, focused on resolving compliance issues and regulatory concerns raised by the RBI and the finance ministry.

Following this meeting, Paytm’s stocks experienced a notable surge of 10%, reaching an upper circuit during intraday trading. This rebound follows a recent downturn where Paytm shares plummeted by 43% over three trading sessions. Analysts attribute this resurgence in investor confidence to the optimism generated by the CEO’s engagement with regulatory authorities.

One key issue discussed was the February 29 deadline imposed by the RBI on Paytm Payments Bank, mandating the cessation of services like cash deposits, wallet top-ups, and FASTag recharges. Paytm has reportedly requested an extension of this deadline, seeking clarity on the transfer of licenses to ensure the uninterrupted operation of its wallet and FASTag services.

Despite the positive momentum generated by the meeting, uncertainties persist regarding Paytm’s future. Speculations abound in the media regarding potential actions by the RBI, including the revocation of Paytm Payments Bank’s license. However, there are also suggestions that the central bank may revise its directives to safeguard the interests of Paytm’s extensive user base.

As Paytm navigates these challenges, attention is focused on mitigating potential disruptions for wallet and FASTag users post-February 29. The outcome of ongoing discussions and regulatory decisions will undoubtedly shape the company’s trajectory in the coming days.
