New Delhi: Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi launched an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi as BJP okayed the release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano rape case. Those 11 men were rapists of Bilkis Bano and killed her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots. AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the centre left no stone unturned for the early release of these 11 rapists and murderers.

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “From the Red Fort, talk of respect for women; but in reality, standing with rapists. The difference between Prime Minister’s promise and intention is clear, PM has only cheated women.”

Asaduddin Owaisi slammed the centre for approving the release of Bilkis Bano’s rapits. He tweeted, “#BilkisBano’s rapists were released early after approval from  @AmitShah’s ministry. These men were guilty of brutal rape & murder. A 3 year old’s head was bashed with a rock. They were killed only because they were Muslim. For BJP, no crime is too grave if the victims are Muslim.”

He added, “The release was against the central government’s own policy. But BJP state and central govt left no stone unturned for the early release of these rapists, murderers & child killers.”

In his address on August 15, PM Modi spoke about women’s empowerment. August 15 happens to be the day when the 11 convicts, who’d got life terms, were released prematurely after serving about 15 years — a concession for their “good behavior”, as per the state government. They were welcomed with garlands and sweets by relatives and some Hindu right-wing outfits.

Speaking of women’s dignity in his address PM Modi on August 15 had said, “It is important that in speech and conduct, we do nothing that lowers the dignity of women… I have one request for every Indian: Can we change the mentality towards our women in everyday life?”

The early release of the 11 offenders was accelerated, according to documents, by both the Center and Gujarat, where Narendra Modi served as chief minister during the 2002 riots. According to papers, the CBI, which investigated the case, and the court that had imposed the life sentence had complained but were disregarded.

The release of Bilkis Bano has been challenged in Supreme Court.

When a mob that slaughtered 14 members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter, gang-raped Bilkis Bano, who was 21 and pregnant, they also killed her daughter.
