The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat sparked a controversy on Monday. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat claimed that India achieved its ‘true independence’ on Ram Mandir’s construction day in Ayodhya. Bhagwat pointed out that the Ram Temple movement was not an effort to oppose anyone but to awaken Bharat’s “self” (swa), enabling the nation to stand independently and guide the world.

He said the day symbolizes the establishment of Bharat’s sovereignty after centuries of “para chakra” i.e.foreign invasion. An idol of Ram Lalla was consecrated at the grand Ayodhya temple on January 22, 2024. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the landmark event. Bhagwat also mentioned the unity and harmony displayed across the nation during the temple consecration, underlining its significance as a moment of national pride and cultural resurgence.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat claimed that India achieved its ‘true independence’ on Ram Mandir’s construction day in Ayodhya. Bhagwat pointed out that the Ram Temple movement was not an effort to oppose anyone but to awaken Bharat’s “self” (swa), enabling the nation to stand independently and guide the world.

According to him, the date of Ram temple consecration should be celebrated as “Pratishtha Dwadashi”. He further said, “What is our tradition of 5000 years? The one which started from Lord Ram, Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva”.

Bhagwat said, “After India got political independence from the British on August 15, 1947, a written Constitution was made according to the path shown by that specific vision, which comes out of the ‘self’ of the country, but the document was not run according to the spirit of the vision at that time”.

The RSS chief was addressing a gathering after presenting the prestigious “National Devi Ahilya Award” to Champat Rai. Champat Rai is general secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. Rai, who played a key role in the temple’s construction, dedicated the award to all individuals who contributed to the Ram Mandir movement, describing the temple as a symbol of national pride.

Rai referred to the Ram temple as “Hindustan ki Moonchh (mustache)” and expressed gratitude for being a part of its realization. The National Devi Ahilya Award, instituted by Indore-based Shri Ahilyotsav Samiti, is an annual honor recognizing contributions across various social domains. The Previous recipients of this award include Nanaji Deshmukh, Vijaya Raje Scindia, Raghunath Anant Mashelkar, and Sudha Murty.

Furthermore, Sumitra Mahajan, former Lok Sabha Speaker and president of the Shri Ahilyotsav Samiti made a big announcement. She announced plans to construct a grand memorial in Indore dedicated to Devi Ahilyabai Holkar. Holkar was the iconic ruler of the Holkar dynasty. The memorial aims to familiarise people with Holkar’s life and legacy.

Bhagwat also took a dig at those who claim that the livelihood of people is more important than temples. He said that the path to the livelihood of people in India is through the doors of Ram temple in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya. Bhagwat said that slogans like “Gareebi Hatao” and ideologies like socialism didn’t help people with their livelihood.

The RSS chief said “There was a movement for the awakening of our own. In the meetings, college students used to ask questions like why did you build temples leaving the concern for people’s livelihood. Someone must have told them to ask this. So I used to tell them that it is the decade of the 80s, we got independence in 1947, Israel and Japan started with us and they reached great heights.

Mohan Bhagwat mentioned a meeting with former President Pranab Mukherjee when the issue of ‘Ghar Wapsi’ (return of converted people to their original religion) figured in Parliament.

He said, “During this meeting, Mukherjee told me that the Constitution of India is the most secular Constitution in the world and in such a situation what right does the world have to teach us secularism”.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in the past has expressed concern over the resurgence of several temple-mosque disputes. He said certain people, ever since the construction of Ayodhya’s Ram Temple, have started to believe that they can become “leaders of Hindus” by raking up such issues. This is not acceptable,”

Following this he was criticised by a prominent spiritual leader Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati. He said “Mohan Bhagwat does not understand the plight of Hindus”Several Hindu temples are being demolished. This is the truth. He is not feeling the pain of Hindus. It is clear from his statement. He does not truly understand the plight of Hindus,” he said.

And now comes his recent statement. According to the Hindu calendar, the consecration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya took place on Dwadashi of ‘Shukla Paksha’ of the Paush month last year. The date in the Gregorian calendar was January 22, 2024. This year, the Paush Shukla Paksha Dwadashi fell on January 11.
