Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a petition challenging the cutting of trees in Mumbai’s Aarey colony for a Metro car shed tomorrow.

A bench led by Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant said it would take up the plea after senior advocate Gopal Shankarnarayan mentioned the matter. Shankar Narayan claimed the cutting of trees is going on overnight despite the stay order earlier.

Save Aarey activist Zoru Bhathena on Twitter alleged that the JCBs are clearing the forest on the Aarey Forest Car Shed plot illegally, he said “JCB’s at work illegally clearing trees in the Aarey Forest

kindly take immediate action to stop illegal tree felling by

on Aarey Forest Car Shed plot.”

One of the Save Aarey Protestors speaking to HW News On Tuesday alleged that “Heavy clearing of the forest is carried on inside the Aarey car shed area by MMRCL using JCBs”.

However, a few weeks ago Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that no more trees need to be cut for the car shed.

The Aarey site has been an issue of contention since the Metro car shed, which was initially decided to be constructed in Aarey by the Devendra Fadnavis government in 2019 and later shifted to Kanjurmarg by the MVA government, has been again moved to Aarey by the new Eknath Shinde government.
