A statement by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is known for his outspoken statements, has come into the limelight again. The Union Minister has criticised the current state of politics in the country and said that he wonders if he should leave politics and when. Gadkari said there are many other things to do in life. Along with this, Gadkari stressed that we need to understand what is politics after all.

‘No development, politics only for  for power’

Addressing a private program on Sunday, Nitin Gadkari said: “If you look closely, politics is for the society. To develop the society. But if we look at the present time, politics is being used only to get power.”

“We have to understand what the word politics means. Is it for the welfare of the society, country or about being in government?” said Gadkari. “Politics has been a part of the social movement right from Mahatma Gandhi’s era, but then it focused on the nation and developmental goals,” the union minister said.

“Today what we are seeing (in politics) is 100% about coming to power. Politics is a true instrument of socio-economic reform and that’s why today’s politicians must work for the development of education, arts etc in the society,” Mr Gadkari said.

Speaking at an event organized to felicitate social worker Girish Gandhi, who is known to have friends across various political parties, Gadkari said: “When Girish bhau was in politics, I used to discourage him because even I think sometimes about quitting politics. Apart from politics, there are many things in life which are worth doing.”

The BJP leader also praised George Fernandes, the deceased socialist leader, for his simple lifestyle. “I learnt a lot from him as he never cared for the paraphernalia of power. He led such an inspiring lifestyle,” he said.
