“Tamasha Orchestrated By PM Modi”: Congress On Bringing Cheetahs To India

“Because our sher is out on Bharat Jodo Yatra,” says Congress while taking a jibe at PM Modi’s initiative of bringing back cheetahs to India

New Delhi: The release of eight cheetahs in Kuno National Park has set off a political squabble in India. Congress called this event of bringing cheetahs to India, a ‘tamasha orchestrated by PM Modi’ amid the Bharat Jodo Yatra of the Congress.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, who was the environment minister in the UPA government, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi hardly acknowledges continuity in governance. Jairam tweeted, “Cheetah project going back to my visit to Capetown on 25.04.2010 is the latest example. The tamasha orchestrated by PM today is unwarranted and is yet another diversion from pressing national issues and Bharat Jodo Yatra.”

“When tigers were first translocated to Panna and Sariska during 2009-11, there were many prophets of doom. They were proved wrong. Similar predictions are being made on the Cheetah project. The professionals involved are first-rate and I wish the project the very best!” he said.

Congress Leader Pawan Khera took a jibe at PM Modi and tweeted, “Because our sher is out on Bharat Jodo Yatra hence those who break India are bringing cheetahs from foreign.”

Speaking of cheetahs being brought to India, Congress on Friday posted a picture of then environment minister Jairam Ramesh with a cheetah in South Africa in 2010. They said that the proposal of Project Cheetah was prepared in 2008-09. The project was approved by the Manmohan Singh government. In 2013, the Supreme Court stayed the project and allowed it only in 2020.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 72nd Birthday, TMC MP Mahua Moitra on Saturday took on Twitter to wish Prime Minister Narendra Modi but with a slight dig.

Referring to the initiative, Mahua Moitra said, “Happy birthday to our Honourable Prime Minister – may he look out for our rapidly extinguishing constitutional protections much the same way as he does for extinct cheetahs”.

Earlier in the week, after alleged violence in West Bengal by BJP workers, Mahau Moita had questioned what will happen if the Trinamool Congress used Yogi Adityanth’s model to combat violence.
