Tamilisai Soundararajan Resigns As Telangana Governor, Likely To Contest LS Polls

Tamilisai Soundararajan stepped down as Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry today. The former Tamil Nadu BJP president is expected to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket.

62-year-old Soundararajan has served as Telangana’s Governor since November 2019 and took on Puducherry’s additional charge in February 2021.

There’s speculation she might contest from one of three seats in Tamil Nadu, including Thoothukudi, currently held by DMK’s Kanimozhi.

In 2019, Ms Soundararajan contested but lost from the same seat. Previously, she ran for the Chennai (North) seat in 2009, losing to TKS Elangovan of the DMK.

Additionally, she contested three Tamil Nadu Assembly elections—Radhapuram in 2006, Velachery in 2011, and Virugampakkam in 2016—losing all three to the DMK, and the AIADMK.

During her tenure, Soundararajan had numerous clashes with the Telangana government, mainly when the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) was in power, whom she accused of not following protocol.

In March last year, the BRS approached the Supreme Court, echoing concerns raised by other non-BJP state governments regarding delays in clearing bills passed by the legislature by their Governors.

In August, Ms Soundararajan ignited controversy by sending back four bills concerning state-run universities, public employment, and an amendment to the panchayat administration.

She has engaged in several intense disputes with former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, even accusing him of illegally tapping her phone. At a Hyderabad event, she declared that the state was in an undemocratic situation.

In September last year, former partners AIADMK ended their alliance due to ongoing criticisms from the BJP’s state leader, K Annamalai, targeting past and present AIADMK leaders like MG Ramachandran and CN Annadurai.

Despite the BJP’s attempts, the AIADMK refused to cooperate, prompting the BJP to contest all 39 Lok Sabha seats alone in alliance with local parties.

Senior AIADMK leader KP Munusamy challenged the BJP to field Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman if they were confident enough
