Telangana Chief Minister KT Rama Supports Yashwant Sinha Nomination

While declaring the TRS’s decision to support Yashwant Sinha today, Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao stated that he will represent the party at the nomination.

New Delhi: Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has endorsed Yashwant Sinha, a member of the united opposition, two days before the deadline for presidential nominations. Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao said he will represent TRS at the candidacy while announcing the party’s choice.

The decision arrived less than two weeks after Mamata Banerjee’s big meeting to discuss a joint strategy for the Presidential election was cancelled because K Chandrashekhar Rao, the chief of the TRS and the Telangana state government, objected strongly to the Congress being invited.

It came as a surprise last week when Rao, Banerjee’s close associate had refused to attend the opposition meeting.

“There is no question of sharing any platform with the Congress,” KCR then had said.

“President of @trspartyonline Sri KCR Garu has decided to extend support to the candidature of Sri @YashwantSinha Ji in the election for President of India

Along with our Members of Parliament, I will be representing the TRS at the nomination today,” KT Rama Rao tweeted today.

TRS had also objected to the “method of trying to put up an opposition presidential candidate”.

“Even otherwise, TRS is not in agreement with this method of trying to put up an opposition presidential candidate. In this case, the candidate was already chosen, and the candidate’s opinion was taken, after which the meeting was called. Why was it done this way? The right procedure would have been to hold meetings, arrive at a consensus, take the candidate’s approval, and then announce the name after a meeting,” the party had said.

Today is the deadline for Yashwant Sinha to submit his nomination. He has declared that, if elected president, he will be “more constitutional” than Draupadi Murmu of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Additionally, he stated that the election is “a struggle of ideas to maintain the Constitution of India,” and that he does not have a “personal conflict” with Ms. Murmu.

Last week, opposition parties revealed that Yashwant Sinha will run for office. Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Farooq Abdullah, and Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the former governor of West Bengal, all rejected to be the opposition parties’ presidential nominees last week, stating various reasons.

Even though the NDA candidate has the best chance of winning, the opposition camp is still holding out hope. According to Sharad Pawar, the situation in the presidential election is not as dire as it has been made up to be, and the opposition parties would need to work together if they want to mount a strong challenge.

In order to elect the President, one must surpass the 50 percent threshold, and the ruling party now holds roughly 49 percent of the electoral college.

Many opposition figures are expected to be present at Parliament House today, including former Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, and others while Sinha is to submit his papers for the nomination.

The final date for filing nominations is June 29, and the elections are to be held on July 18.
