The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been authorized by the Centre to take leading the investigation into the violent murder of a Hindu tailor in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Delhi: The investigations into the violent murder of a Hindu tailor in Udaipur, Rajasthan, has been transferred over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The anti-terror organization will probe into any ties between the case’s accused and international conspiracies as well as extremist or terrorist groups.

On Tuesday, Udaipur witnessed the murder of a tailor named Kanhaiya Lal by two men who chopped off his head and then aired a video confessing to the act in retaliation to a social media posting in defense of former BJP spokesman Nupur Sharma.

Officers arrested the two suspects, and the Rajasthan Police established a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the case. Soon after the event, the Center sent a four-person NIA team to Udaipur.

“MHA has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the investigation of the brutal murder of Shri Kanhaiya Lal Teli committed at Udaipur, Rajasthan yesterday. The involvement of any organisation and international links will be thoroughly investigated,” the Home Minister’s Office tweeted today.

Meanwhile, Kanhaiya Lal’s murder sparked outrage and isolated incidents of violence in Udaipur, which led to the imposition of a curfew in some areas of the city.

Mobile internet services were halted over the following 24 hours, and prohibition orders forbidding citizens from congregating were hammered down all through the state for a month.
