US House Approves Bill Banning TikTok Nationwide

On March 13, the United States House of Representatives passed a bill with 352 votes in favour and 65 against, seeking to ban the Chinese social media platform TikTok. The legislation moves to the US Senate and the White House for presidential approval.

The decision to target TikTok reflects renewed concerns among US lawmakers regarding Chinese social media apps’ national security implications, given TikTok’s substantial American user base.

According to the bill’s provisions, ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, must divest from the platform within 165 days or exit the US market. Only selling its interests would allow TikTok to continue operations in the US.
