Under heavy security, the day started with the swearing-in of 249 council members. But soon after all of the council members had taken the oath, disorder and yelling broke out. The House was adjourned by the presiding officer until a new date for the mayoral elections was announced.
Following the consolidation of its three divisions last year, this is the civic body’s second effort to pick its first single mayor in ten years.
Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) candidates for mayor and deputy mayor, respectively, were on the ballot. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rekha Gupta and Kamal Bagri are running for mayor, respectively (BJP).
AAP and BJP officials came under fire earlier this month after images of chaos within the House surfaced.
Last month, the AAP overthrew the BJP’s 15-year hold on the civic organization.
