50-60 people charged with sedition for pro-Sharjeel Imam slogans at Mumbai Queer Parade

After ‘Free Kashmir’ poster case this is the second case that has come up in an anti-CAA rally where the Mumbai Police were dealing with anti-India remarks

Mumbai: On Monday Mumbai police filed a case on charges of sedition against more than 50 people for allegedly chanting slogans in support of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam, arrested in a sedition case, at Mumbai Pride Solidarity Gathering held in Mumbai on February 1 after a video of the incident was shared by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. The video has also been vigorously circulated on social media platforms.

Urvashi Chudawala was recognized as one of the accused and who is also associated with TISS Queer Collective and student of second-year MA in media and culture at Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS).

Urvashi Churawala, and 50 others who have purportedly chanted, ‘Sharjeel tere sapnoko hum manzil tak pahuchaenge means Sharjeel, we will fulfill your dreams.

The Mumbai police have made a watertight case against the accused. Urvashi Chudawala’s social media posts were studied before taking the case, a senior official said.

As per the police officials, Urvashi Chudawala was called for questioning twice for preliminary probe into the case but she didn’t come.

A case has been filed under section 124 A (Sedition), 153 B (Imputations assertions prejudicial to National Integrity) and 505 (statements conducing public mischief).

After ‘Free Kashmir’ poster case this is the second case that has come up in an anti-CAA rally where the Mumbai Police were dealing with anti-India remarks. In this case, Urvashi Chudawala’s social media posts and activities were also studied to make a watertight case.

The organizers of LGBTQ event are not the accused in the case. It was a group of people who didn’t follow guidelines and chanted such slogans said Mumbai police.
