Meanwhile, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, son of popular advocate turned Union Minister Ram Jethmalani was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha to fill the seat that has fallen vacant due to the demise of BJP leader Raghunath Mohapatra.
BJP leader and former journalist Swapan Dasgupta was renominated to his vacated Rajya Sabha seat on Tuesday after unsuccessfully contesting from the Tarkeshwar constituency in the recent West Bengal elections.
A Home Ministry notification on Tuesday evening said: “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of Article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to renominate Shri Swapan Dasgupta to the Council of States to fill the seat which has fallen vacant due to his resignation for his reminder term viz – 24-04-2022”.
The President nominates renowned personalities to the Upper House on the advice of the government. The nominated members are drawn from fields such as literature, science, sports, art, and social service.
Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Jairam Ramesh tweeted: “I think this is the FIRST time since the Rajya Sabha came into being in 1952 that such a thing has happened.”

“I thank all those who have sent me good wishes on being re-nominated to the Rajya Sabha. I am also grateful to those with contrary opinions for engaging. All I can say (to borrow from a recent saying of a Bengali sister) is that they must have honoured me because I am a Bengali.” tweeted Swapan Dasgupta.

Dasgupta had been among the many BJP MPs drawn into the battle for Bengal as the BJP lacked credible faces for the urban voters.

Jethmalani Jr, a practitioner of criminal law, often as a defence counsel, is currently representing Mumbai’s former police commissioner Param Bir Singh and state’s former commissioner (SID) Rashmi Shukla in their recent ongoing court battles against the Maharashtra government.
Advocate Pranav Badheka, Jethmalani’s junior, said he “would certainly be an asset to the Parliament, given his legal expertise, vast experience and erudition.” reported TOI
