Akal Takht chief calls for banning RSS, says it is dividing the nation

“There are Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jews, Parsis faith existing. It is wrong to call India as Hindu Rashtra,” said Akal Takht Chief.

Chandigarh: The Akal Takht chief, the head of the top Sikh body called for a ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Monday, alleging that it is dividing the nation. The RSS is considered the ideological parent of the BJP which rules the centre.

Akal Takht chief Giani Harpreet Singh said, “The statements being made by RSS leaders are not in the country’s betterment.” He was speaking in Amritsar. Singh said that RSS ideology is not in the country’s interests. Instead, it will only hurt India and destroy it.

“There are Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jews, Parsis faith existing. It is wrong to call India as Hindu Rashtra,” said Singh.

The Akal Takht chief’s statement came in response to RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat’s Vijaydashmi speech in which he reiterated Sangh’s belief that India is a Hindu Rashtra and lynching is a foreign concept.

The Akal Takht, translated as “Throne of the Timeless One”, is the highest temporal seat of the Sikh community. Located in Amritsar, it is part of a complex of religious buildings centred on the Golden Temple.

However, this is not the first time that the Sikh community religious leaders have slammed RSS. Last week, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Gobind Singh Longowal too objected to RSS chief’s “Hindu Rashtra” claim.
