Altaf Bukhari Launches New Political Party in J&K, Calls It ‘Apni Party’

According to sources, around 30 more leaders of J&K from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference (NC), and Congress are expected to join in.

Srinagar| Former leader of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Minister in Mehbooba Mufti’s government, Altaf Bukhari, launched a new political party named ‘Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Apni Party’ on Sunday. He also said that the party would preserve the self-respect and dignity of the state and would ensure a dignified return of Kashmiri Pundits.

He also said that his party would want to end the mistrust between the state and New Delhi.

“We have to do business with Delhi, whosoever rules Delhi. We don’t look at Delhi from the point of who is ruling in Delhi today. We look at it from the government of India. We have no hesitation in dealing with the government of India. There is an atmosphere of mistrust and we want to end the mistrust between New Delhi and J&K,” Bukhari said.

“This party is not floated by a family and there will be a total restriction that anybody who becomes President of the party cannot be elected more than 2 times. It is by the commoners, for the commoners, of the commoners,” he further added.

Hours before the launch of his new political outfit, Bukhari was unanimously elected as a President of the party. According to sources, around 30 more leaders from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), National Conference (NC), and Congress are expected to join in, among which many are former legislators and ministers.

The developments come 7 months after the abrogation of article 370 in the state of Jammu and Kashmir which granted it a special status. These political proceedings are unprecedented when the mainstream politicians of Jammu and Kashmir are under detention.

“We are not here to sell dreams and fantasies but will always be pragmatic, honest and fair in our approach. We have resolved to create a political platform where people are real stakeholders of the political process,” Bukhari added.
