Amit Shah to visit Assam for the first time since the publication of final NRC list

Amit Shah will attend the North East Council (NEC) meeting in Guwahati on September 8 and meet the Governors and Chief Ministers of the eight states.

 

New Delhi| Union Home Minister Amit Shah will be visiting Assam on a two-day tour beginning today. This will be Shah’s first visit to Assam after the National Register of Citizens (NRC) report released on 31st August. It will also be his first tour of the North-Eastern state after becoming Home Minister. The final NRC list excluded 19 lakh people.

There is a lot of uneasiness among the people about the names of those who have not appeared in the NRC in Assam. Amit Shah will attend the North East Council (NEC) meeting in Guwahati on September 8. During this, he will meet the Governors and Chief Ministers of the eight states. Shah will also be present during the meeting of BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance.

Significantly, after the publication of the final NRC list, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP chief Ranjit Kumar Das had said that they were unhappy with the NRC in the current form as the names of many genuine Indian citizens were not included.

Both Sarma and Das had said that the government was likely to take some legislative options to protect the rights of genuine Indians.
