New Delhi| The incident of Muslim man being beaten up for wearing skull cap in Gurugram evoked strong reactions on Monday. Reacting strongly to the incident, newly elected BJP MP from East Delhi-Gautam Gambhir called the act deplorable and called for immediate action from the police.

A 25-year-old Muslim man was allegedly assaulted here by four unidentified youths for wearing a traditional skull cap. The accused threatened him saying that wearing a skull cap was not allowed in the area. The accused removed his cap and slapped him asking him to chant Bharat Mata ki Jai. The accused also asked him to chant Jai Shri Ram. When he refused, they beat him.

Taking it to Twitter, Gautam Gambhir said, “In Gurugram Muslim man told to remove skullcap, chant Jai Shri Ram”. It is deplorable. Exemplary action needed by Gurugram authorities.” He added that India is a land where Javed Akhtar has written a Hindu prayer song while Rakyesh Mehra has written Muslim prayer song in a movie.

Explaining his views, he further said that his thoughts on secularism emanate from PM Modi’s mantra “Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas”. Gambhir said, “I am not limiting myself to Gurugram incident alone, any oppression based on caste/religion is deplorable. Tolerance & inclusive growth is what idea of India is based on.”
