Aurangabad To Be Renamed Sambhajinagar, Osmanabad As Dharashiv; Maharashtra Cabinet’s Decision Amid Uncertainty

Amid political uncertainty in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government Wednesday approved  a proposal to rename Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv. This comes in the backdrop of long-standing demand to rename the cities.

In what could be its last major decision in the 31 month-old Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government, the Shiv Sena-led government also cleared proposal to name the Navi Mumbai airport after DB Patil, the leader of the Project Affected People of Raigad and Thane district.

These decisions come at a time when the Uddhav Thackeray-led party faces a serious political crisis with a large chunk of the party MLAs having deserted the Sena.

The Shiv Sena has filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s ruling shortly after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was instructed to demonstrate his majority tomorrow. The Governor took action a day after being informed by a BJP delegation that the coalition in power had lost its majority.
