BJP and Congress equal dangers: CPI(M) political draft

Even if the CPI(M) is opposing BJP, it has decided not to go with the Congress. It is known that Party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and Party chief Prakash Karat had differed on an alliance with Congress.

Setting aside the internal rift in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) over the proposed alliance with Congress, the party on Tuesday made the document of its political resolution public. The party’s politburo conducted its 21st meeting in Kolkata last month.

The draft resolution cites BJP as its main enemy. The document reads, “The BJP-led NDA government is pursuing a vicious four-pronged attack on the country and our people: through the aggressive pursuit of neo-liberal economic policies; the sharpening of communal polarisation in various forms.”

However, even if the party is opposing BJP, it has decided not to go with the Congress. It is known that Party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and Party chief Prakash Karat had differed on an alliance with Congress. While Yechury batted for CPI(M) to join the unifying opposition under Congress, Karat was against the idea. It is also visible in the party’s political draft. The draft explicitly spells out the opposition to any “understanding or electoral alliance with the Congress party”.

To take on the BJP, the political draft suggests adopting appropriate electoral tactics to increase the ambit of the anti-BJP votes.

Lashing out at the Congress, the party draft says that there is no difference between the ruling BJP and the Congress. The draft calls Congress as a party of “big bourgeois-landlord classes”. It also challenges Congress’ claim of being a secular party. The draft slams Congress saying the party has failed to fight the communal forces effectively even if it calls itself secular.

Further critique of both the national parties, the document says, “There cannot be a line of treating both the BJP and the Congress as equal dangers.” As a political strategy for the upcoming elections, the draft offers to work with regional parties who are not aligned to BJP. However, the CPI(M) draft opposes any national level alliance with the regional parties.

The document asserts, “There is no scope for a national level alliance with the regional parties.”

A few days ago Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Ashok Chavan had appealed the two Prakashs, CPI(M)’s Prakash Karat and Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh’s Prakash Ambedkar to join hands with Congress. However, the CPI(M) has evidently snubbed it.
