BJP to felicitate its victorious minority candidate

Kolkata: In a bid to reach out to the minorities of the state, the West Bengal BJP Minority Morcha has decided to felicitate its victorious minority candidates in the just concluded rural polls in the state.

“We have decided that we will felicitate all the victorious candidates from the minority community,” state BJP Minority Morcha president Ali Hossain told PTI.

“We had wanted to field more than 2000 minority candidates. But due to unprecedented terror, we could field only 850 minority candidates, out of which 50 had managed to win. We will felicitate them on June 3,” Hossain said.

According to state BJP sources, this is not only the highest number of candidates the saffron party has fielded ever in the panchayat polls in the state.

In the 2013 panchayat polls, the BJP had less than 100 from the minority communities in its candidate list.

“The minority community has realised that BJP is not their enemy as projected by other parties. They have realised that BJP believes in development for all,” he said.

Nipah virus claims 2 more lives in Kerala

TestHostEntry

Two more people have died in Kerala of Nipah virus, taking the total number of deaths to 15. Both the cases have been reported from Kozhikode.

Madusudhanan (56) and Akihil Karasserry (28) died in Kozhikode Medical College Hospital on Wednesday night. Initially, both showed some symptoms of recovery, but later their condition deteriorated, the official said, adding that both might have contracted the infection from the hospital.

A soldier died on Monday in Kolkata of suspected Nipah virus. Seenu Prasad was from Kerala and was posted at Fort William. He was admitted to hospital on 20 May, seven days after his return from a month’s holiday in Kerala. State health director, Dr R L Saritha said the state is yet to get any information about his death.

The deadly virus, which infects both humans and animals, spreads through contact. The infection in India is believed to have started in Kozhikode in Kerala, where dead bats were found in an unused well inside a home. Four members of the family that stayed there have died, including a man and his two sons.

When the state was trying hard to contain the outbreak, the arrival of south-west monsoon has brought more worries.
