JP Nadda who had served as Union Health Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first government was dropped this time.
New Delhi| Senior BJP leader JP Nadda has been appointed as BJP’s working president. The decision was taken at BJP’s Parliamentary Board Meeting held at BJP headquarters.
The BJP was in a search for a new president since Amit Shah moved to the Union Ministry. On May 30, Amit Shah took oath as Home Minister. On the other hand, JP Nadda who had served as Union Health Minister in Modi’s first government was dropped this time. However, the leader did not seem upset with the party. This had led to reports that he might be taking over as the chief of the party.
Commenting on the development, Union Defence Minister and former party president Rajnath Singh said that the decision to make JP Nadda working president of the party came as Amit Shah will not be able to give enough time for the party since he has been made Home Minister. He said, “BJP won several elections under the leadership of Amit Shah Ji. But since PM appointed him Home Minister, Amit Shah Ji himself said the responsibility of party president should be given to someone else. BJP Parliamentary board has selected JP Nadda as working president.”

JP Nadda is known as a low-profile leader in the party. His wife, Dr Mallika Nadda, is a professor at the Himachal Pradesh University.
The BJP leader started his political career with the ABVP in Patna. He was elected as the Secretary of the Patna University in the 1977 student’s elections. Under his leadership in 1984, the ABVP for the first time defeated the Students Federation of India (SFI) in the HPU and he went on to become the student’s union president. He remained the national general secretary of the ABVP from 1986 to 1989.
He was appointed as the president of the BJP’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in 1991 at the age of 31. In 1993 HP assembly polls, Nadda first entered the electoral politics and won from Bilaspur. He again won from the Bilaspur seat in 1998 and was made the health minister in the Prem Kumar Dhumal government. He lost the seat in 2003 but bounced back in 2007 and was again inducted into Dhumal’s cabinet.
In 2010, Jagat Prakash Nadda quit Prem Kumar Dhumal’s ministry following his appointment as BJP general secretary. However, in 2012 he was chosen unopposed as the Rajya Sabha member from Himachal Pradesh.
