“Chidambaram’s arrest personal & political revenge,” says Congress

Randeep Surjewala said that P Chidambaram has been taken into custody based on the statement of a woman accused of killing her daughter.

New Delhi| After more than 24 hours of search, the CBI arrested former finance and home minister P Chidambaram. Congress has attacked the Modi government calling this a “revenge”. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that the spirit of revenge is working in the country. “The country saw the killing of democracy,” Surjewala said.

He said, “BJP has converted CBI and ED into the revenge department. It is a murder of democracy, the condition of the economy is bad. We are seeing how a BJP government is working to divert attention from these issues.” Referring to Indrani Mukherjee, Surjewala said that a person, who spent 40-years in public life, has been taken into custody based on the statement of a woman accused of killing her daughter.

Surjewala added, “P Chidambaram’s name was not even mentioned in the FIR. The charge sheet has not been filed in the case yet. The propaganda machinery of the BJP is engaged in propagating false facts. What is the purpose of the arrest in the case that happened 12 years ago? The BJP has not been able to gather evidence in more than five years.”

The Congress spokesperson said, “The prejudice of personal revenge, the way former finance and the home minister was arrested has proven to what extent the Modi government can fall for personal revenge. To divert the attention of the nation, the Modi government has created a drama of the arrest of Chidambaram for the last two days.”

Karti Chidambaram calls the arrest “Spectacle for TV”

Karti said that the arrest of his father is a “malicious” act by a “pliant” agency. He said, “This is a totally vindictive and malicious act, done by a pliant agency. This is only done to settle political scores. There was absolutely no necessity to have done this.” Calling it a “trumped-up” case, he further said that this was done only to tarnish the image of Congress and the former Finance Minister.
