Adding that the decision was reached onto after consulting the officials of the disaster management team, the officials of the Electricity Board stated, “There is no greed involved in not releasing waters”.

The flood started two weeks ago when the waters had to be let out from the dam in Idukki after it filled to its capacity. Around the weeks that followed, the state was struck with torrential rains and waters were let out from as many as 80 dams that flooded the downstream areas. Within a few days, 13 out of 14 districts were struggling to stay afloat.

Around 1 million people were compelled to leave their homes and a number of them were left with no home to return to. Aside of houses, a huge fraction of the infrastructure of the state-rail tracks, bridges and roads have been swept.

The state government stated it would take 2 years at the minimum to rebuild and it has yet to put a figure to the money that is required for it.
