“Congress committing suicide”, party whip in Rajya Sabha resigns

New Delhi | Congress’ whip in Rajya Sabha Bhubaneshwar Kalita has allegedly written a resignation letter to the party, claiming “Congress is committing suicide”.

“Today the Congress party asked me to issue a whip on the Kashmir issue,” the letter reads.

Kalita, a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, announced his decision to step down on Twitter, shortly after a meeting of Congress MPs was held in Parliament House.

“But the thing is that the mood of the nation has changed and it is against the wishes of the people.”

“The Congress leadership is trying to completely destroy the party. No one can stop the Congress party from destruction,” Bhubaneswar Kalita said in the letter.

Kalita has said that the resignation has been accepted.

However, he told ThePrint that he has not written any such letter and will reveal his reasons in a few days.

Home Minister Amit Shah today announced in the Rajya Sabha that Article 370 has been abrogated from the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Upper House also passed a Bifurcation Bill on Monday evening, declaring Jammu and Kashmir to become a Union Territory with a legislature, and Ladakh without a legislature.
