Senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat passes away

Mumbai | Senior Congress leader and former Minister of State for Home Affairs Gurudas Kamat passed away at the age of 63 on Wednesday in a private hospital in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri.

A 5-time Member of Parliament from Mumbai, Kamat also served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs with an additional charge of Minister of Communications and Information Technology from 2009 to 2011 during the UPA- 2 government.

In 2013 Kamat was appointed General Secretary All India Congress Committee and given charge of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and was also appointed as a member of the Congress Working Committee. However, in 2017 Kamat resigned from all positions that he held at the Indian National Congress.

Maharashtra Youth Congress leader Satyajeet Patil informed on Twitter about the demise of Gurudas Kamat. He wrote,”Shocked … My leader Gurudas Kamat is no more. It is my personal loss as well as unrepairable loss of Congress party.”

Kamat who was Member of the Parliament for the Mumbai North West in 2009 and Mumbai North East constituency in 1984, 1991, 1998 and 2004 also served as the president of the Indian Youth Congress and in 1987, and President of Mumbai Congress in 2003.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi also expressed his condolence on the sad demise of Gurudas Kamat,”The sudden passing away of senior leader Gurudas Kamat ji, is a massive blow to the Congress family. Gurudas ji helped build the Congress party in Mumbai & was greatly respected & admired by all. My condolences to his family in their time of grief. May his soul rest in peace,” he tweeted.
