UP Congress insists on making Priyanka Gandhi CM candidate in 2022

Rae Bareli | Uttar Pradesh General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and UPA Chairman Sonia Gandhi yesterday held a review meeting to discuss the massive defeat in Lok Sabha polls.

The party workers demanded that Priyanka Gandhi should be projected as the chief ministerial face for the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls.

The Congress managed to win only one Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh out of 80, Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli.

They blamed poor performance on weak organisational structure and suggested avoiding any alliance for the 2022 Assembly polls and bi-elections of 12 seats.

These seats have fallen vacant following the election of 11 MLAs as MPs and disqualification of BJP MLA from Hamirpur Ashok Chandel.

“In the meeting, we requested Priyanka Gandhi to strengthen the party for upcoming bypolls and state elections. We have also conveyed to her that she should become the chief ministerial face to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The leaders also said that we should contest future polls alone and not have an alliance with any political party”, said Congress leader and former Varanasi MP Rajesh Mishra.

“Most of us believe that the main reason behind Congress’s drubbing is weak organisation in most constituencies. The same was also conveyed in the meeting. We have decided to work harder and strengthen our party at the booth level across Uttar Pradesh. If Priyanka Gandhi starts a door to door campaign then we will definitely form the next government in the state,” he added.

The party also urged Gandhi to select the candidates on time for as much impact as possible.

Congress leader from Fatehpur constituency Rakesh Sachan accused the BJP of polarising the elections.

“It is true that the party leaders want Priyanka Gandhi to lead Congress in the assembly polls. We have lost the elections because the BJP was able to successfully polarise the elections”, he said.

“We are sure a new party organisational structure will be put in place after June 14 when Congress general secretary for west UP Jyotiraditya Scindia will review the party’s performance in west UP in 2019 polls. Hope the changes will begin on June 15,” said another senior party leader.

Sonia Gandhi later hosted dinner at the Bhuemau guest house for local leaders and booth level workers to thank them for contributing to her victory in Rae Bareli.
