Congress Kicks Off Week-Long Meet, Sonia Gandhi To Meet Dissenting Party Leaders Today

Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister met Sonia Gandhi after the death of Ahmed Patel. He appealed her to meet Congress leaders and resolve the issue.

New Delhi| No one in the party currently has an answer for when the period of turmoil will end in Congress. Interim party president Sonia Gandhi started meeting several party leaders from Saturday. The meetings will last for a week. It will discuss the grievances of the party leaders, the strategy for the upcoming elections for the party president.

Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Nabi Azad, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Anand Sharma, former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, former Finance Ministers P Chidambaram and Ambika Soni have reached 10 Janpath to attend the meeting on Saturday. Earlier on Friday, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that 99.9% of the party’s leaders want Rahul Gandhi to take over as president again.

Why are meetings happening?

Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister met Sonia Gandhi after the death of Ahmed Patel. He appealed to the interim president to meet party leaders and resolve the issue. According to the information, the meeting can also discuss the appointment of party presidents in states, next year’s assembly elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

Deadlock inside the party

A month ago, Ghulam Nabi Azad questioned the way the party functioned. He said that elections cannot be won with 5-star culture. “Today, there is a problem with politicians that if they get a ticket, they first book a 5-star hotel. If the road is bad then they will not go on it. No election can be won until this 5-star culture is abandoned,” Azad said. In the last 72 years, Congress is at its lowest. The Congress has also not held an election for the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha during the last two terms.

Leaders had also written a letter to Sonia

A few months ago, 23 party leaders also wrote letters to Sonia Gandhi on this issue. These included Ghulam Nabi Azad along with Kapil Sibal. The letter demanded a change in the party from top to bottom.

After the defeat in Bihar elections, Kapil Sibal even went so far as to say that the party has probably accepted defeat in every election as the destiny. This was considered as the target of the party’s top leadership i.e. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi.
