Congress MP Manish Tewari refers to ’50 Shades Of Grey’ during Article 370 debate

New Delhi | In an unusual reference, the erotic novel 50 Shades of Grey has been mentioned in a Parliament speech. Congress MP Manish Tewari has referred to the book during a heated discussion of Article 370 which was abrogated by the government.

The NDA government announced on Monday that Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, has been scrapped away. The Bifurcation Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha later that day and it was not tabled in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

Manish Tewari rose up to speak against these decisions.

At the end of his speech, Home Minister Amit Shah, demanded to know the actual party’s stand on the issue and not just “general talks”.

“I just want a little bit of clarity from Manishji,” Amit Shah said. “He didn’t say whether the Congress supports the scrapping of Article 370 or not. Please make this clear.”

To this, Manish Tewari responded: “Angreezi ki ek kitaab hai… har cheez kaali ya safed nahi hoti… there are 50 shades of grey in between.” [There is a book in English… not everything is black or white… there are 50 shades of grey in between.]

Manish Tewari was supposedly referring to The famous erotic novel The Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L James.

Home Minister Amit Shah also introduced a Bill to divide the state into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The Rajya Sabha approved both the resolution and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019.
