Congress to nominate BK Hariprasad for RajyaSabha deputy chairman election

New Delhi | Congres General Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP BK Hariprasad might be the party’s candidate for the upcoming election for the post of Rajya Sabha deputy chairman.

According to sources, the Congress party is thinking to make BK Hariprasad contest against JD(U) MP and NDA candidate Harivansh Narayan Singh for the election which is to be held on August 9. The decision has come after there was rumour about the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Vandana Chavan representing UPA. Chavan’s name was proposed by Trinamool Congress MP Derek Obrien.

Responding to reports, BK Hariprasad while speaking to media said, “Party must have taken this decision after a lot of thinking. We will talk to all the opposition leaders and discuss what is to be done.” He further added that “We could not reach on a consensus with the central government in this regard but we do have the support of the opposition parties.”

The post of the Rajya Sabha Deputy chairman is lying vacant after the retirement of PJ Kurien. Earlier Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu announced in Rajya Sabha that the election will be held at 11 am on August 9. Naidu suggested that the deputy chairman should be elected by consensus. Nomination papers will have to be filed before noon on August 8.
