A senior leader of the West Bengal Congress said that there was a claim to a strong seat rather than the number in seat sharing with the Left.
Kolkata| The Congress will not repeat the mistakes of Bihar in the West Bengal assembly elections. Instead of contesting more seats in alliance with left parties, the party will bet on a strong seat. So that it can perform better than the last assembly election. In the year 2016, Congress contested 92 seats in the coalition and won 44 seats. However, in the Lok Sabha elections, the alliance of Congress and Left was discontinued.
A senior leader of the West Bengal Congress said that there was a claim to a strong seat rather than the number in seat sharing with the Left. The decision will be made on the basis of the performance of the party in the last elections. Unlike Bihar, the will not take a seat in an alliance that has never been won.
In Bihar, the Congress won only 19 seats, while it contested only 70 seats. To increase the number of seats, the party contested many seats on which its performance in the last several elections was very poor. At the same time, the Congress had given up many of its strong seats to keep the left parties in the coalition. Along with this, the Congress had to lose many seats due to AIMIM contesting the elections.
The Congress has formed a committee comprising state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, Abdul Mannan, Pradeep Bhattacharya and Nepal Mehet to negotiate seat sharing with the Left. The committee is negotiating seat sharing with left parties. Along with seat sharing, the two parties are also discussing joint program and election schedule. The party leader said that our effort is to have the Congress-Left alliance emerge as an option in the elections.
Actually, the 2016 assembly elections were fought by the Congress and the Left in alliance. In this election, Congress contested 92 seats and got 44 seats. While the Left could win 26 seats by contesting 148 seats. However, it got around seven per cent more votes than the Congress. After this, the alliance of the two parties broke in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Congress got only two seats in these elections, while the Left could not win an y seat.
