New Delhi | The Delhi High Court has dismissed Former Union Minister P Chidambaram’s anticipatory plea for protection from arrest in the INX Media case.
“Both the petitions (in CBI and ED case) are dismissed,” the court said.
The advocate appearig for Chidamabarm had sought stay on the execution of the order for three days.
During the arguments, both the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate had opposed Chidambaram’s plea on the ground that his custodial interrogation was required as he was evasive during questioning.
The high court had on July 25, 2018, granted interim protection from arrest to Mr Chidambaram in both the cases and it was extended from time to time.
Following the rejection of the anticipatory bail plea, P Chidambram lawyers are likely to approach the Supreme Court.
INX Media case
The case was registered on May 15, 2017, when Chidamabaram was still the Finance Minister under Dr Manmohan Singh-led UPA government.
Karti Chidambaram — who is also being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI — has been accused of getting the government clearance for INX Media.
It has been alleged that P Chidambaram was instrumental in providing government clearance to INX Media to receive foreign funds.
Chidambaram strongly denied the claims and said that Modi government was targetting him.
A case of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) case has been filed against him.
Karti was arrested on February 28, 2018 by the CBI and was later released on bail.
