New Delhi | The Delhi police on Monday filed a 1200 page chargesheet in the Patiala House Court against former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Union (JNUSU) leaders Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid for allegedly raising “anti-national slogans” during an event on Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in February 2016.

According to the Delhi police, the charge sheet has been filed under IPC section 124A (sedition), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 465 (forgery), 471 (using as genuine, forged document), 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 149 (unlawful assembly with common object), 147(rioting), & 120B (criminal conspiracy). The filed charge sheet names Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya, Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayeea Rasool, Bashir Bhat along with others. Shehla Rashid and CPI leader D Raja’s daughter Aparajita Raja have also been named in the chargesheet filed in the case.
The chargesheet is based on the FIR which was filed days after the event was held on February 9, 2016, to protest the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. Umar Khalid, Kanhaiya Kumar and Anirban Bhattacharya were arrested by the Delhi police for their involvement in the protest were some student allegedly shouted anti-national slogans.
Responding to the news, Kanhiaya Kumar said,” If the news is true that a chargesheet has been filed, I would like to thank police and Modi Ji. The filing of charge sheet after 3 years, ahead of elections clearly shows it to be politically motivated. I trust the judiciary of my country.”
