Voting underway for Student Union election in Delhi University

New Delhi | Student Union election in the prestigious Delhi University is currently underway as students are voting to elect their representatives.

The polls which begin at 8.30am will be continued till 7.30pm on 12th September as the students will be electing the representatives for the academic year 2018-19. The counting of votes will begin at 8.30 am on 13th September at the Community Hall, Kingsway Camp, New Delhi.

The major contenders in the elections are National Student Union of India(NSUI) the student wing of Congress, Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVPP) the student wing of BJP. While Aam Aadmi Party’s Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) and All India Students’ Association (AISA) have formed the first ever alliance in Delhi University Elections.

The manifesto of NSUI includes promises like complete meal thali for Rs 10; reduction in fees in all colleges; concessional student pass in Delhi Metro and DTC buses; demands distribution of free laptops; celebration of all states and their special cultures; demands formation of Students Right Commission; Implementation of UGC Guidelines on ICC to prevent sexual harassment of women along with getting DU status of ‘Institution of eminence’ which would enhance Delhi Universities budget by Rs 10 billion.

The promises of ABVP include bringing reform in the admission process, demands for logical fee structure, assurance for better hostel facilities, regular police patrolling, demands for insurance for students up to Rs 500,000 at a premium of one rupee per day.

The alliance of CYSS and AISA has promised for the opening of ‘Chhatra clinic’ in the colleges for providing free health facilities to the students, ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards hooliganism in the campus; installation of CCTV cameras across all four campuses.

NSUI would like to repeat its 2017 performance when it bagged the post of President and Vice President after the ABVP holding the position for 5 years. The CYSS is returning to the polls after 2 years
