‘We don’t give importance to Amit Shah’s statement’: Bangladesh on BJP president’s ‘termite’ remark on immigrants

New Delhi | The Government of Bangladesh has termed the statement of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on immigrants as ‘unwanted’ and has said that Bangladesh does not give importance to such statement as it is not an official Indian government version.

BJP president Amit Shah during his political rally in Delhi had termed illegal immigrants as ‘termites’ eating into the country’s resources and said each one of them would be identified and thrown out. He said, “These crores of illegal immigrants are like termites and they are eating the food that should go to our poor and they are taking our jobs. They carry out blasts in our country and so many of our people die.”

Responding to the statement, Bangladesh’s Information Minister Hasanul Haq said,” Amit Shah has made an unwanted remark by describing Bangladeshis as termites.” Haq while speaking to media said, “There is an information gap. I hope he knows no Bangladeshis are staying in India. All Bangla-speaking people living in India are not Bangladeshis. We do not give any importance to his statement as it is not an official Indian government version.” Taking a dig at Amit Shah, Haq said,” Amit Shah was not qualified to speak on the India-Bangladesh relationship.”

Speaking about the controversial National Register of Citizen (NRC) in Assam which termed 40 lakh as illegal citizens, Haq said,” Citizen’s register process in Assam was an internal matter of India and Bangladesh is not concerned about any situation within the states of Assam, West Bengal or any other states of India.”
