Smriti Irani further said “Sonia Gandhi, you sanctioned the humiliation of Droupadi Murmu. Sonia Ji sanctioned humiliation of a woman in the highest constitutional post.”

New Delhi:  Amid the chaos in parliament on Thursday over Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury referring to President Droupadi Murmu as “Rashtrapatni”, Sonia Gandhi, in a stunning move, crossed the floor of the House to have a word with  BJP MP Rama Devi and clarify that Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had already apologized. Smriti Irani reportedly intervened, and Sonia Gandhi said “Don’t talk to me”, according to sources.

The dramatic scenes occurred during a break in Lok Sabha, adjourned amid loud protests by BJP MPs against the Congress President and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

“Sonia Gandhi, apologize,” Smriti Irani said in the house, with members of the ruling BJP holding up placards.

Smriti Irani further said “Sonia Gandhi, you sanctioned the humiliation of Droupadi Murmu. Sonia Ji sanctioned humiliation of a woman in the highest constitutional post.”

Smriti Irani and other MPs intervened and raised slogans as the Congress president approached the treasury benches.

That is when TMC MPs and NCP’s Supriya Sule drew Sonia Gandhi away from the shouting. BJP members. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi later stepped in to defuse the situation.

Outside the house, when asked whether Mr. Chowdhury would apologize, Sonia Gandhi told the media “He has already apologized.”

“Union Minister Smriti Irani behaved indecently and abusively in Lok Sabha today! But will the speaker condemn it? Are rules only for the opposition,” Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said.

On Monday Election Commission of India announced a change of date of by-polls in 14 assembly constituencies from November 13 to November 20.

The poll panel stated, “Representations have been received in the Commission from various recognized national and state political parties (including BJP, INC, BSP, RLD, and some social organizations) for a change of date for polling in some Assembly constituencies having by-elections on November 13, 2024, given the large-scale social, cultural, and religious engagements on that day which may cause inconvenience to a large number of people, give rise to various logistic issues, and may result in reduced voter participation during the poll.”
