Kolkata | TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee, while unveiling the new statue of Vidyasagar which was vandalised last month accused the BJP of turning Bengal into Gujarat.
In the month of May during BJP Chief Amit Shah’s rally in the city, clashes erupted between BJP and TMC, which led to the vandalisation of the bust of Bengal’s great reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar.
“The rally was taken out by Amit Shah. He is now the Home Minister. Why did he allow that (vandalisation)? They have destroyed it. We have all the proof. Yet they are lying,” the TMC chief said.
She further added, “What do they want? Are they planning to convert Bengal to Gujarat?”.
“Bengal will never turn into another Gujarat”, Mamata Banerjee declared.
“By vandalizing the bust of Vidyasagar, his work Barnaporichoy can’t be destroyed. By criticising Raja Ram Mohan Roy they can’t destroy the culture of Bengal. This is an attack on our culture, our vision. Its an attack on our history. It’s a conspiracy to destroy Bengal. It’s a conspiracy to wipe out Bengal’s literature and history. They will never succeed”, she said.
Banerjee said that she will work for her people and will continue to do so until she dies.
The Trinamool Congress supremo paid floral tributes to the 19-century social reformer at a ceremonial programme at the Hare School ground on College Street.
