Efforts will be taken to release all 7 convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi case: DMK Manifesto

Chennai | MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK) which is in alliance with the Congress for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, released its election manifesto at an event.

In a controversial move, it has promised that the party, if came to power, would make efforts to release all the 7 convicts held in the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case on humanitarian grounds.

In the past too, DMK has requested the state government to release all those who were convicted in the case. The case pertains to the killing of the former PM Rajiv Gandhi who was killed in a suicide bomb attack on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbadur in Chennai.

Here are the other highlights in the manifesto:

DMK has promised that the NEET exams will be abolished.

Assurance that demonetisation victims will be compensated.

Educational loans of selected students will be waived off.

It has promised to help all the Sri Lankan refugees to get citizenship.

All the South Indian rivers flowing through the state will be connected.

DMK has also asserted that Tamil will be made the official language in Central Government offices in Tamil Nadu.

The party has vowed to grant full statehood to Puducherry.

More government jobs will be created, and the existing vacancies will be filled up.

Free rail facility will be provided for school and college students.

DMK, which is one of the key political parties in Tamil Nadu and has ruled the state for several terms in the past.

The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to be held in seven phases, starting from April 11 and ending on May 19. Tamil Nadu goes to poll in the second phase, on April 18. The counting of votes will take place on May 23.
